On the basis of current prospects and potentials, I believe that the future city in Vietnam will become a modern and sustainable urban center. The city will develop with a smart, clean and efficient transportation system, which will help reduce congestion and environmental pollution. In particular, the public transport system will develop strongly, including urban railways, rapid buses and other clean means of transportation. In addition, the management and use of clean and renewable energy sources will be prioritized, helping to minimize negative impacts on the environment. With the development of technology, the city of the future will become a technological and innovative center, attracting investors and highly qualified workers. Information technology and artificial intelligence applications will be integrated into different areas of life, from transportation to health and education. The technology will be applied to optimize traffic, minimize congestion and travel time. A smart city is a city formed and developed on an IT platform that helps connect and build an overall organic system based on a component network system with an artificial intelligence system.
This system is formed based on the smooth coordination of 4 elements: digital telecommunications networks (nerves), sensors (senses), software (mental and cognitive) and intelligent embedded systems (brain). This whole system will help improve the quality of people’s lives, improve the service quality of the city government, save energy and help effectively manage natural resources.
The trend of smart cities is a common development trend of all cities in the world and Vietnam is also among the countries that have successfully embraced the trend. The Government of Vietnam identifies sustainable and smart urban development as a breakthrough direction to improve competitiveness among countries.
Over the past time, Vietnam has actively participated in the smart city network in Asia and around the world. Currently, in Vietnam, there are more than 40 localities implementing the Smart City model. According to experts, smart cities will be the future of real estate projects, high-quality residential areas that improve the quality of experience and utilities for residents.
The application of the smart city model helps cities optimize resources, protect the environment, ensure security and utilities for people, sustainable development and socio-economic development. The construction of a smart city is not only the responsibility of the state and authorities at all levels but also the consensus and support of people and businesses.
Therefore, the future smart city in Vietnam is a developed city based on the progress of science and technology, especially the field of information technology combined with artificial intelligence (AI) based on big data (Big Data) to solve social problems such as traffic jams, environmental pollution, saving and improving energy efficiency. Smart cities in the future also focus on people and businesses, not only beneficiaries but also important components, participating in the connected and smart urban systems of cities.
In addition, the smart city will focus on building sensor systems, digital telecommunications networks, internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence to collect, analyze and process data in real time, offering suitable solutions for urban management and operation. Not only that, improving the quality of people’s lives, improving the service quality of the city government, saving energy and helping to effectively manage natural resources will also be focused. The smart city of the future in Vietnam will be a sustainable, modern and integrated urban model with the world.
Some examples of future smart cities in Vietnam are: Da Nang City, with 70 smart cameras that not only monitor, detect but also allow citizens to monitor and report when detecting problems; Thua Thien Hue, with Hue-S application integrating government services for people and businesses; Ho Chi Minh City with a smart seaport toll collection system saves time and increases budget revenue. These cities have applied technology to solve traffic, environmental, healthcare, education problems… and improve the quality of life for the people.
To achieve this, we need investment in infrastructure, technology and human resources, collaboration between authorities, businesses and communities, and citizen participation in decision-making and monitoring processes.

As more and more people move into urban areas, environmental issues become more urgent, and cities will have to rethink their systems and impact. Many cities around the world have started adopting more environmentally friendly methods, and some trends are starting to emerge. The “green cities” or sustainable cities of the future will build on these, taking today’s environmental practices further.
According to the UN, 68% of the population could live in cities by 2050, which translates to an additional 2.5 billion people in these areas. In the face of this increase in urbanization, cities that do not pay attention to sustainability can pose a major threat to the environment.
The sustainable cities of the future may not look like they do today. However, with current trends and developments, the future “green city” in Vietnam is likely to be as follows.
The first is Zero Emission Transportation. Transportation contributes more to carbon emissions than any other sector, generating nearly two tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2018. In response, green cities will prioritize zero-emission transportation. Reducing emissions is already a focus today, but in the future, this could scale towards eliminating them altogether. As vehicle technology improves, cities will put more effort into supporting low-emission motor vehicles. This change will start with public transport, introducing a passenger train system, discouraging driving. Then, through attractive policies such as subsidies, cities will encourage environmentally friendly private cars.
The second is to increase biodiversity. As cities continue to grow, habitat destruction becomes a more pressing issue. Sustainable urban areas will begin to emphasize the importance of maintaining wildlife within city limits. The cities of the future will literally be greener, with more flora and fauna in urban centers. Preserving natural areas within city limits will slow habitat destruction, preserving ecosystems as cities expand. Increasing green space in an area will help improve air quality through plant respiration. With more birds and insects, it will be easier for cities to maintain urban gardens, providing an environmentally friendly food source.
The third is to build conscious energy. Electricity is the second largest contributor to carbon emissions. From lighting to HVAC systems, buildings use significant amounts of energy, and cities have a large number of buildings. Sustainable cities will have to find ways to accommodate more residents while maintaining low emissions. The immediate and most obvious solution today is to switch to renewable energy. However, the cities of the future will go a step further, when considering energy savings in the building design itself. The designs will allow for things like easier airflow and natural light so that these structures will use less energy in the first place. Energy savings are especially important for the advent of smart cities. As these areas increase technology and connectivity, they will use more electricity. For smart cities to become a viable option, the same regions will have to adopt energy-conscious habits.
The fourth is waste management. With more residents, the cities of the future will generate more waste. Recycling initiatives are inherently popular, but sustainable cities of the future can do much more in waste management. Instead of just reducing and eliminating waste in a sustainable way, cities will use it to help in other areas. As the smart city movement grows, urban areas will need every bit of renewable energy they can get. Finding ways to generate electricity through everyday processes like these will be a necessity.
Large-scale urbanization is inevitable. Countries need not avoid expanding cities but should instead focus on making these regions sustainable. In the face of growing environmental concerns, the cities of the future will have to go green to support population and technological growth. Smart and sustainable city movements are not opposites. Instead, practical actions of a sustainable nature will help improve smarter cities. Smart cities that exist will be sustainable cities.
